Hope. This simple word echoes powerfully and frequently these days. Webster’s dictionary defines hope as, "a feeling that what is wanted will happen; desire accompanied by expectation." As we put 2008 behind us, it is helpful to define hope. Desire and expectation, these words imply we know what we want.
Herein lies the confusion and mixed messages of ego’s small, distorted will. It is this, the planets encourage us to transform. Releasing fear-based expectations and instead embracing the Love and Will of Creation as the focal point for manifestation holds great promise. Then the journey becomes magnificent, filled with joy, clarity and purpose.

The planetary energies of January initiate a potent thrust into new terrain, a strong urge to courageously embrace a new way of living. From an astrologer’s point of view, 2009 holds great promise and comes with tremendous hope. Significant planetary alignments support the actualization of positive dreams for each of us and for the planet.
I am very hopeful about 2009 for a number of reasons.
First of all, Jupiter enters Aquarius on January 5. Aquarius is all about the future. It is the zodiac sign of hopes, dreams and global service. For those receptive, Jupiter in Aquarius will give a long-term vision for the future. It will download the next steps in personal and planetary evolution into human consciousness.
The year begins with Mercury, the planet of communication, joining Jupiter. This combination stimulates a buoyant, confident, optimistic attitude. Under these planetary influences a new president will be inaugurated along with the progress implied by this monumental change. Of course, there is a long way to go, but eyes will turn from the past to focus on the future.
Because of Mercury’s retrograde movement from January 11 to February 1, these planets come together three times; December 31, January 18 and February 24. You will find that the first two months of 2009 set the pace for the year. Look for synchronous meetings, events and ideas that re-energize your hopes and carry human consciousness from pessimism to optimism.
Over the year, Jupiter joins Neptune three times; May 27, July 10 and December 21. It is helpful to know about this trend ahead of time, because it has a very high side, and a potential downside. On one hand, it will uplift, and stimulate tremendous compassion and support humanitarian pursuits. On the other, there will those who may use this energy to exploit and deceive others.
High Guidance & Big Change
It can be likened to a hall of mirrors that tests our vision and our alignment with truth and integrity. This combination powerfully and positively supports invention. There is an air of excitement as humanity is more receptive to solutions coming from subtle realms of consciousness. Humanity’s understanding of energy will blossom and grow. This includes the healing arts as well as scientific knowledge.
Saturn and Uranus will oppose each other two more times in 2009; February 5 and September 15. A breakdown process started last year. Saturn is the planet of foundations, and Uranus is the planet of extraordinary, unusual, unpredictable change. Their dance represents unprecedented advancement on many fronts.
But, life can be messy and confusing at times. What we can predict is a continued sense of uncertainty and urgency that lights rockets of desire in humans. Whatever it takes to get us moving, Saturn and Uranus lift us out of ruts on the highway of progress.
Clarity for High Goals
With holidays well behind us, our focus returns to work. The Full Moon on January 10th emphasizes the balance between home base, career and larger social contribution. Sun, Mars and Pluto transit Capricorn skies and they support a resolute determination to start the New Year in a positive and productive direction.
The Full Moon is an excellent time to embody and clarify goals. Capricorn’s symbol is the mountain goat. The climb is steep, rocky at times, and takes keen sight, deliberation, discipline and persistence. Capricorn encourages us to be proper stewards of our inheritance, the rare opportunity to incarnate as a conscious human being.
Chinese New Year & Aquarius New Moon
Annually, the Chinese New Year is celebrated on the New Moon in Aquarius. Occurring on January 26th, this New Moon is also a Solar Eclipse. A powerful statement of initiation, this lunation emphasizes the future. Where are we going, and how are we going to get there?
Eclipses seed new energies upon the planet. Seeds are planted underground, in the depths of the human psyche, invisible until sprouting. Preparing the way, winter has also drawn us inward, away from the hustle and bustle, to reclaim our inner sanctum, that place of restoration and healing.
Eclipses also cast shadows, adding to the uncertainty and indecision of recent months. Therefore, as much as January reveals new direction, it is advisable to sleep on all major decisions. Between an eclipse and Mercury retrograde, this is the month to gather information and review all plans.
Timing & Integrity
When we try to push ahead of ourselves, the timing may be off, obstacles and confusion can set in. Use these cold, winter days to meditate deeply, sipping upon the warm tea of life, casting aside personal agendas to accept guidance from deep within your inner Self.
January is a blend of Capricorn and Aquarius. These zodiac signs emphasize key truths. They ask us to be proper stewards of our inheritance on many levels. Along with the rare opportunity to be born as a conscious being, we make home on an abundant, beautiful planet.
As a humanity, are we going to squander this chance? Or, are we going to reach our hand to turn the knob, and walk through a very open door. It is our choice, and this is a decisive moment. May our true hopes for an enlightened humanity be revealed upon this green gem of Mother Earth.
