2014 begins with signs humanity can no longer ignore. Hiding one’s head in the sand, pretending, dragging and numbing in a variety of ways, these strategies no longer get us anywhere. Abrupt, decisive and determined, a Capricorn New Moon on January 1, gets the juices going, projects flowing, and resolutions humming.

Authenticity & Higher Purpose
As the most realistic of zodiac signs, Capricorn brings us face to face with what is not working in our lives, what needs to be released, as well as what needs to be strengthened and focused upon. Only then, can the process of manifestation, Capricorn’s gift, be actualized.

However, there is a caveat with Capricorn energy. When one’s focus is exclusively on needs of self and tinged with greed, possessiveness, desire for power and control, the process of manifestation is diminished substantially, fraught with complications and delays.

In recent history, it may appear that bullies have a leg up, but in reality they are caught in the snare of illusion with consequences on down the road. As a result of Pluto passage through Capricorn (2008 - 2025), humanity is being tested to rise to the higher ground of integrity and accountability.

The only intentions that have any real lasting and contributing value are those taking into consideration the whole, aligned with higher purpose and potential for benefitting the whole. January is the month to align, attune and adapt to your unique and valuable purpose, the great gift of incarnation.

Ascending Beyond the Familiar
Now, I am not saying this is always an easy process. The very nature of current planetary trends is to leave no stone unturned in the quest for this larger purpose. It is transcendent of anything we have experienced before. It requires a deeper relinquishment of control than ever, a deeper commitment and trust in ultimate goodness than ever. It is mind blowing, and paradigm shifting.

Astrologers call this configuration a Grand Cross, and more recently this shift has been dubbed a Cardinal Climax. A number of planets started activating this phase in the summer of 2010, and continue through Spring 2015. This rare planetary grouping has far reaching results.

The disruptions and changes, shifts and transformations have long-term impact, and the more we realize the need to go beyond where we’ve ever been, the more we can collectively wake up from a deep and dark trance. The days of holding back and holding on are concluding in dramatic ways.

Grand Cross/Cardinal Climax
Grand means large, sweeping, important and substantial. A cross consists of a horizontal line and a vertical line. It brings to mind the cross of sacrifice and the crossroads of decision. The cross points to the reconciliation of opposites in order to make powerful, peaceful and informed choices.

In astrology, cardinal means to make movement and respond to the need for constructive action. A climax is a culmination, an obvious and noticeable peak.
From the last week of December 2013 through to January’s Full Moon on the 15th, there is a rare chance to see this Grand Cross/Cardinal Climax fully activated.

Whether we are looking at peak oil, the peak of greed and depravity, the peak of political turmoil, the peak of ignorance in the face of tremendous technological advancement . . . the list goes on and choice is clear. It is essential to back away from the cliff of no return, and take serious stock of current trends, personally and collectively.

Standing at the crossroads requires careful planning and circumspect navigation. Impetuous action leads nowhere. Habitual reactivity is contagious and only leads to more complications. Playing the blame game simply passes the buck and accomplishes nothing. Reaching into deeper levels of truth and desire is the only way through this intersection of destiny.

Connecting to Core Energy
Cultivating these attributes can feel like a full time job, but they are the meeting place of sanity, and this month of strong Capricorn influence provides an ideal environment to stabilize within the core of your inner being, the center of the cyclone. Long held, suppressed and stagnant conditions are especially susceptible and ready for upgrades during these breakthrough times.

That said, these combustive planetary trends are taking place in very uncertain and volatile economic, political and social conditions. From the fire in one’s gut that says, "enough!" to heroic gallantry, there are many positive advancements underway.

One of the major themes of 2014 is security, and how to cultivate safe harbors and calmer waters within the sea of change and unrest. Discussion revolves around how to do so in the midst of many unknowns.

As the year progresses, these trends have the power to break the gridlock in Washington. However, those forces working to undermine progress will exert their agenda. As a new congress begins to emerge over the year, leadership will come forward that is more inclusive and aimed toward reasonable cooperation.

Collective Engagement Moves Forward
The first 6 months of 2014 are decisive for the country’s long-term progress. As leaders from other countries emerge on the world stage, the U.S. is posed to retract from being the world’s sole policeman and savior. Boundaries and alliances are in a state of flux, and the nation’s identity is being challenged and reformulated.
Watch the week of January 13 for especially noticeable and important developments as the Full Moon on the 15th exactly stimulates the U.S. financial arena. However, Aquarian influences are beginning to be felt as Mercury enters Aquarius on January 11th and Sun on the 19th.

There is a balance called for between a past, appearing to be set in stone, and a nebulous and unpredictable future. Many solutions abide on the level of community and grass root developments.

The zodiac sign of Aquarius is light, free and electrical in nature. It is like a thunderstorm coming to clear the air and reveal an unseen landscape. Chinese New Year celebrations on the 31st follow an Aquarian New Moon on the 30th.

Additionally, on the final day of January, Venus begins a direct and forward movement after being in retrograde since Winter Solstice. This signals the conclusion of many delays in finances, planning, career goals and relationships.

Daring to Dream Anew
As I have mentioned in previous articles, 2010 - 2015 are years of unprecedented change. It is a time of revolution, within and without. A keen longing to break free of limitations is the fuel for this transformation. It is not as simple as the popular Monopoly game, and landing on the space to receive a "Get Out of Jail Free" card. This liberation takes thoughtfulness, patience, diligence, commitment and real work.

Whether you are called to personal liberation from destructive habits, or called to action in the world, or more likely a combination of both, it begins with self-reflection, telling the truth, goal setting, and courage.

As always, January is an ideal month to hibernate quietly and sweetly dream. We live in a world that desperately wants to awaken from a nightmare of its own creation, and dream a new dream. Each moment we choose gratitude, beauty, love and trust, is a moment that builds collective intention for a kinder and gentler world. So simple, yet so profound, step-by-step, we awaken to a new year. 2014, here we come!
