February dawns with some major shifts in perspective. First of all, according to Chinese tradition, Year of the Green Horse is officially underway as of January 31st. As the archetypical horse comes into power, we are asked to take the reins of our hopes and dreams, and passionately explore new terrain.

To recap, 2013 was a challenging year ruled by the Snake. It was a year of soul searching, shedding old skins, releasing the past and facing shadows within and without; building a new foundation of being. A distinct shift from internal processing in isolation and darkness is upon us as Horse emerges into the light of day. On one hand, Horse needs the structure of boundaries, those fences of physicality and reality. On the other hand, horse is headstrong and craves the freedom to roam.

Gestating the New Stories
2014 will bring attention to the structures that hold life together - relationships, social convention, rules, laws and regulations. It is a year whereby the grain is separated from the chaff. Dreams that are viable and real will be easily manifested. Unrealistic and fanciful dreams will meet with form, be tested by existing structures, and need to be reinvented. Horse needs solid ground beneath its feet to take off and race down the track of life.

On January 31 another significant planetary shift took place. The motion of Venus is now direct, and this glowing beauty of a planet is now visible in the morning sky. Venus rules over the flow of ease, affection, harmony and money. Through recent months, Venus in Capricorn has been serious and constrained, cold and isolated, not conducive for passion and ardor. As Venus meets the dawn, she will dispel the darkness of night, another indication of illumination coming our way.

Many factors point to a slow motion ride throughout February. Mercury, the planet of communication, enters a retrograde phase on the 6th, taking its own sweet time until going direct on the final day of February 28th. Not only is there the natural hibernation of winter, but Mercury in Pisces can support the process of visualization, imagination and reclusiveness.

The first half of February is characterized by Mercury in Pisces closely joined with Neptune in Pisces. Pisces is the most mystical, dreamy and idealistic of zodiac signs, naturally lending itself to prayer, contemplation and meditation. However, like a fog, this planetary combination can cast its illusionary spell of glamour.

This foggy time can feel confusing and disorienting as it dissolves boundaries of consciousness, opening perception to more subtle and hard to define sensitivities. Those people susceptible to substance abuse or mental illness can be quite challenged with this combination.

Breakthrough Time!
The remainder of February, Mercury retrogrades back into Aquarius, the zodiac sign of invention, connection, friendship and community. The Aquarius Full Moon on February 14 closely aligns with Mercury. Therefore watch mid-month for important decisions, insights and inspirational breakthroughs that seem to come out of nowhere. As this is Valentine’s Day, relationships are enhanced, and possibly filled with unique connections, surprises and intrigue.

On February 15, an important time in a Mercury retrograde cycle occurs. Known as the inferior conjunction, Mercury joins the Sun to further the themes of reflection. Astrologer Erin Sullivan has this to say, "This is a ‘new’ Mercury phase. It marks a time to rest and recuperate, scaling down initiatory action and allowing the unconscious to work.

Progress is only measured by reflection on its worth, and by looking back one sees how far one has come." Insight, revelation and direction revealed at this point tends to carry forward through to the Spring Equinox on March 20, setting the pace for a dynamic, active and outgoing spring.

Breakthroughs in Relationships
Another important element in February’s line-up is the transit of Mars through Libra. In mythology, Mars is the god of war, known for its aggressive, competitive and fighting influence. Since December 7, Mars has been in the zodiac sign of Libra, presenting the rare necessity for cooperation. Libra is all about peace, harmony and skillfully relating to one another as individuals, groups and nations.

This combination brings acute recognition to the parts of a relationship that may be in conflict. Mars in Libra encourages facing these conflicts head on while making headway in personal authenticity. It is a time of taking responsibility for one’s point of view, while side stepping the blame game, and seeing through the eyes of another.

By February 18, the Sun enters Pisces, and the final stage of winter is underway. Maintaining warmth through nourishing foods and self care continue to be very important now. Mystical, contemplative, artistic and gentle, the Pisces time of year is best used for creative projects, humanitarian concerns, healing and spiritual attunement. It is a time of purification on every level, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. You may find yourself instinctively surrendering to “what is” while finding solace in the present moment.

The second half of February is marked by two other planets in extraordinary relationship with each other as Jupiter and Uranus travel the heavens together. The last time they joined forces was the summer of 2010, which was a major breakthrough season characterized by the Gulf oil spill and other unpredictable events. Exact on February 26, be on the lookout for release of conditions that may have been "set in stone." When these planets join there is a strong desire to take a risk, change, transform and be free.

More About Being Than Doing
All in all, February is a month filled with unpredictable breakthroughs that cannot be forced. It is a month less about doing and more about being. Touching into the field of all potential, it is a time to dream new dreams based on what your true self and higher power have in store for you.

Currently, from the spiritual and philosophical perspective, there is a tremendous focus on the art of manifestation, but if something is not aligned with the Divine Plan, it cannot come into being.
It takes extraordinary trust to relax into what life has planned. Trusting it is the best, beyond what the little self and mind can possibly dream up. It is just a matter of getting out of the way, and seeking alliance with the most magnificent and glorious universe, filled to overflowing with gifts of love for every being.

We live in a rare and unique age, on the threshold of transformation. Doors of new perception are opening wide, and it is simply a matter of moment-by-moment dropping old baggage for self and others while embracing forgiveness and accepting freedom. Easier said than done, but throughout February, the zodiac teachers of Aquarius and Pisces gently and compassionately nudge us on our way home to where we really belong.
