Many astrologers, our own Belinda Dunn included, were very excited when Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama’s campaign released his birth information (complete with birth time for accurate natal charts—August 4, 1961, 7:24 pm, Honolulu, HI). As anyone who has had their own chart done, it is not all that surprising to find that Obama’s astrological profile validates what many already believe about him.
Barack Obama’s Natal Astrology Chart
While the Sun Sign is the most obvious element, it is not always the most important. This holds true in Obama’s case. So instead of discussing his Leo Sun, below are highlights from his chart that may influence whether he will become our next president.
An interesting aspect of Obama’s chart is not only his Aquarius Ascendant, but that the New Moon eclipse on Super Tuesday was nearly exact on his rising sign. Obama claimed more state wins than Hillary Clinton and began his front-runner status.
Aquarius Rising characterizes Obama as being progressive and supporting positive change; being aware of interconnections and interdependence; being interested in social justice, equality and human rights; dismissing traditional gender roles; and being an independent thinker who recognizes the social/political ramifications of personal actions.
Mars in Virgo
Mars is thoughtful and cautious in Virgo because Virgo needs order and security, making the Mars drive and expression more precise. While Mars is the warrior god, Mars in Virgo is not likely to go to war on a whim or enact any violence without careful analysis.
With Mars in Virgo, Obama possesses endurance, perseverance and self-discipline. He chooses practical, realistic goals and pursues them step-by-step in a well-planned, orderly way.
Furthermore, Obama’s Mars trines Saturn, which is all about hard work, success and discipline. This aspect indicates a patient focus on one’s goals.
Aquarius South Node & Leo North Node
In Obama's chart, the South Node is in Aquarius and in the first house. This aspect implies that Obama came into this life identifying himself (first house) with equality and social justice.
His North Node is in Leo in the seventh house. Since South Node is what we bring into the world and North Node is what we aim to achieve, his Leo North Node drives Obama to express more of himself—through partnership with others (seventh house).
Additionally, Uranus (ruler of Aquarius) conjuncts his North Node. This illustrates Obama's interest in talking to all kinds of people and learning their views in order to effect change. Both Uranus and Aquarius are overwhelmingly concerned about issues of social justice and equality.
Mercury in Leo
With his Mercury also in Leo, Obama is a person of strong opinions and expresses his views energetically and often dramatically. He is an entertaining speaker with an aptitude for storytelling and performing. Mercury in Leo helps Obama to be a good politician, spokesperson, group leader, director or coach.
Having an abundance of ideas, interests and plans for the future, Mercury in Leo seeks to understand the broad overview and see the whole picture. Obama is able to read between the lines and to sense what people are feeling as well as what they are saying. He would tend to work well with and understands women, and the emotional, feminine side of life.
Jupiter in Aquarius
Obama’s Jupiter is in Aquarius, which indicates that one of his strengths is the ability to be innovative and open to new progressive concepts. He is also willing to experiment and reject customs or traditions that no longer serve a positive function in the present.
Jupiter in Aquarius encourages an expansive view of the world (including all beings in it) as well as unselfishness and generosity. This draws Obama toward giving time and energy to charitable organizations and helping the disadvantaged to achieve the greater good, and we already are seeing this.
Jupiter in Aquarius suggests that Obama’s aspirations and dreams are always tempered by realism and practical considerations; he pursues his aims in a systematic, disciplined and thorough manner, and is willing to take time, advancing slowly and steadily on his way to the goal.
Pluto in Virgo
Being born while Pluto was in Virgo (1956-1971), Obama is part of a generation of people who are often driven by the need to find an ethical standard and a clear sense of what is right and what is wrong. There is a subconscious drive to straighten out all the world's evils and create a world of perfect order.
Barack Obama & the US Chart
There are close connections between Obama's chart and the US chart. Among the several tight intra-aspects are two that support his national popularity. Obama’s Neptune in Scorpio is exactly, to-the-minute, conjunct the US Scorpio Ascendant. This suggests a balancing of the drive for material gain with values of unconditional love, intuition and spirituality.
As JFK did in the early 1960s, Obama seems to be channeling the nation's collective hopes and visions for a better world. He announced his candidacy on February 10, 2007, when transiting Neptune was conjunct his Aquarius Ascendant, thereby giving his personal stamp to the collective urge for redemption from failed political, social and economic policies.
In the political realm, Neptune is associated with utopianism or socialism—especially when Neptune is in Aquarius. Within modern capitalism, Neptune's message is a leveling of the playing field, and as much as possible, a redistribution of wealth. At its best, Neptune symbolizes the ideal, charisma and hope for a better future.
The US Aquarius Moon represents this country’s multicultural population, its hunger for news and its sense of justice and fair play. Obama’s Uranus is exactly opposite the US Moon, which symbolizes mood, national security needs and popular opinions. In the last 50 years, no president has ever been elected without a close connection to the US Moon.
The US Moon in Aquarius and Obama's Uranus makes an orb that is tighter than anything in McCain's chart. It's what perhaps allowed Obama to surpass other well-known and popular national candidates, notably John Edwards, who has zero natal or progressed connections to the US Moon.
Obama’s natal Uranus conjuncts his Leo North Node in the seventh house of partners and the general public. This combination is being further activated by his progressed Jupiter in Capricorn—indicating a steadfast commitment, especially to sustained effort, and being blessed with the promise of success. Obama's progressed Jupiter in Capricorn also happens to conjunct the US Pluto, the nation's ruling planet.
Jupiter to Pluto attracts the attention and support of America's wealthiest and most influential people. His Jupiter is standing direct and will be where it forms a precise quincunx to his North Node for many years, promising a bright future in American politics.
Also, Obama's Uranus to the US Moon supports his ability to bring an aura of excitement and dramatic change to the political arena. What makes this connection so strong right now is that Obama's progressed Venus is forming a conjunction with natal Uranus. A well-placed Venus, and especially when Uranus is involved, brings tremendous popularity.
Two of his aspects, Venus conjunct North Node and Venus quincunx Jupiter, became exact on October 18 and October 24, 2008, respectively - just in time for the national election.
On November 4 (election day), transiting Saturn and Uranus was forming an exact opposition, pitting elements of the status quo (Saturn) against the forces for dramatic change (Uranus). With Aquarius Rising and transiting Uranus in his first house, Obama clearly personifies the Uranian elements of humanitarianism, freedom, expression and working for the greater good.
Obama's progressed Sun will be very favorably sextile his Midheaven in 2009, which represents a natural assumption of power.
